Destee 03-18-2004, 05:50 PM Hello Family,
There are many things we use to define ourselves ... determing if we personally think, we are successes or failures ... such as ... if we have a degree(s), if we have money, if we look good, if we're ugly, if we have a # of children out of wedlock, if we're married, if we've ever been in jail/prison, if we have a career, if we have "successful" children, if we treat others properly, if we are poor, if we care for our Families, if we help our Sister/Brother, if we love God, if we know lots of people, if we have read many books, if we don't have a job, etc., etc., etc.
My question to you is ...
1. What do you use to gauge your personal success or failure?
I will really appreciate your responses. While i have many successes in my life, there are times when i feel like a complete failure. I'm hoping that your responses will help me get a handle on this.
Looking forward to your responses. Thanks a Bunch Family.

A wise sage once asked me: "How do you know when you're right?" I pondered this for some time and all my answers were wrong. Here is the answer he gave me: "By the results that you get."

Therious 03-20-2004, 12:34 AM In my vision success is if you are at peace with your self, and if you control your own destiny, (as much as you can these days). My success comes from my creativity, when i complete a track, and finish recording a song (wether or not any one ever hears it). Also i feel success by helping others. This web site is a cimplete success providing a voice for the unheard. Bottom line...
In my opinion success is anything you work hard for and achieve. Or being at peace after you have failed. Success is knowledge of self, and the universe.

MANASIAC 06-29-2004, 10:34 AM I gauge my success on the number of people I help, if I cannot help folks, I feel like I have not succeded. I gauge my failure on the in ability to provide for others.
MrBlak 06-29-2004, 01:27 PM Success to me is achieving all or most of the goals I set for myself. It is not solely in one area of life. I have a degree and am studying on the next level now, that is A success. At the same time, my social life has been a complete failure and until recently, nothing was right in it. My love life is straight garbage and because of that, some of the goals I have in life will be severely delayed....particularly starting a family. I learned long ago not to base my level of success on what others think, though it makes no difference because I am harder on me than anyone else could ever be.
All that to say, I guage success by the ammount of goals achieved, how long it took, and if it is up to par with my age and stage of life I should be in.

I agree. Success to me is being content with myself, knowing that I'm trying to do things my way. Also, helping others and making others happy is a good feeling to me. As far as financial, success would be making sure I can always be there for people in my life. I don't need alot to be me, so the extra I will use to help out loved ones. Success as far as love would be finding someone that I make happy enough to be loyal and loving to me. Like I said, I don't need alot to be me, so feeling completely successful is not going to be hard at all.
jamesfrmphilly 06-29-2004, 02:46 PM i have had great success in life by some standards.
yet i have never been content.
is the glass half full or half empty?
i have more understanding than the average cat, yet i don't know nothing.
I'm reaching the end of my days but I'm hustling more than i did when i was young.
it's very confusing and i fear i will go to my grave still trying to figure it all out.
rasheed 06-29-2004, 04:47 PM My question to you is ...
1. What do you use to gauge your personal success or failure?
Success for me is in realizing that i am not a failure; that we were all the results of success not of accidents but well planned actions of our Creator who is the ultimate of Success......just the right sperm and egg and everything before that and after that, just right........
jazzymoonchild 06-29-2004, 04:51 PM One area of my life where I feel completely successful and blessed is my daughter. At 12 years old, she is so well grounded, understanding, caring and sweet. And it can be biased coming from me, but when her teachers, family and friends, or our neighbors or people at my job constantly tell me what a joy she is, I am moved to tears that I did good with her.
My spiritual walk has faltered. Not in my belief in GOD, but I keep leaving his side, trying to help HIM do HIS work with me. HE doesn't need my help. I think right now, since I am going through trials and trying to be still and listen, cutting away the negativity that has surrounded me for so long, everything else will come together. My success will be gauged by GOD and the peace that I have within me.
Isaiah 06-29-2004, 10:41 PM Brother Rasheed, deep answer, man(smile!) I like it, I like it!(smile!)
For me, success and failure are one, as in the beautiful things so-called failure teaches you(smile!) Failure, in that sense, is greater than success, because success rarely leads to deep thought and contemplation, rarely leads to challenging oneself to return to the scene of their greatest travail and tragedy, nor turns those events into something one can cherish and call upon for the rest of their lives.
Success is never giving up, or giving in... Having a victorious mindset despite one's "failures." True Failure is giving up one's dreams, and dying the slow and excruciating death of one who has lost his soul...
Brother Therious spoke of having a peace of mind as something he associates with success, and I think that is pretty wise. What I have come to realize in my life is that tomorrow is a new day... That is my motto for about 10 or 15 years, for many days I've gone to bed feeling bad about some event in my life, only to see things turn 180 degrees in my favor 24 hours later... Those experiences embody a saying that I've heard Christians use: Let Go, and Let God...(ah!) I'm not a Christian, but I dig that phrase as a believer in The Creator...
In any event, this attitude gives me an inner-peace, a sense of faith that everything will work itself out - for better or for worse... Whatever The Creator wants, yeah, I want that(smile!) If it is what my fellow human beings call "failure", bring it on... I always feel I am going to have the last laugh, because God is the Greatest, and God is On My Side... That's success for me...(smile!)
Peace!
Isaiah
