Ghostdog...

There were several movies made during the nineties that attempted
to shed light on the harsh life of inner city life, the ghetto, gangs, poverty...etc.
Some quite effective...some not...

Couldn’t help but notice your age...but if you enjoyed this movie, then
you must see "Menace to Society"...it will make this movie...by far, a pale
comparison of the life that is being depicted in both movies.
The movie was directed by Albert & Allen Hughes (the Hughes Brothers).
It features the following actors/actress : Tyrin Turner, Larenz Tate,
Jada Pinkett, and Samuel L. Jackson.
Also, if you have not seen "Boyz in the Hood"...this is also a classic
and they tend to out shine SC. Unlike "South Central" and "Boyz in the Hood"
there is no "moral" message being shoved down the viewers throat.

They were all filmed in the following order:

Boyz in the Hood...1991
South Central...1992
Menace to Society...1993

Be sure to let me know what you think, once you've seen it...I'd still like
to know if you think SC is the deepest movie... :wink:after you've seen MtS.

I have a few to name. 2001 a space Odyssey. This movie dropped a lot of metaphysical "markers". The black Monolith should speak for itself. Another movie was the X-files Movie. ONce again. a black substance threatening "mankind" this time. A substance that was hear from the beggining resurrected to eradicate a relatively new being on the planet. hmmmmmm? who could that be? I wonder

Oh I can't forget to Mention all of the Star Wars Sagas. Jedis(Djed Eyes) Annikan SKywalker(ANi, the sumerian God of heaven) Annikan destined to free the slaves in the film Phantom Menace, hmmmm. Annikan later becoming Darth Vader(Daath) the invisible sephiroth, just above the Sun called Tiphareth on the tree of life in the Kaballah. Luke being the Son/Sun of Darth. Need I go on?

If I've understood GhostDog correctly, he is asking for references for movies
within the same genre of South Central.... :look: :)

Movies of the Genre like South Central or boys in the Hood have very profound messages, but let's not be one dimensional in our definition of what constitutes "Deep Movies"

THis is particuliarly why, posted a genre of cinema.... outside the scope of the aforementioned movie.

sekhemu your statement about the starwar movies was very informative..i should have, but really didn't respond to the film completely...maybe instinctively that was why...i knew James Earl Jones was the voice of Vader and i thought , once again they have that old cowboy image of the "good guys" in white hats and the "bad guys" in the black hats..
to the question tho..
any movies written and directed by the great Haitien Raou Peck is worth seeing.
The african film Cedo is worth seeing (you will see everybody you know in this one...from the pimps to the religious zealots...and it takes place in the early l900's , but you would never know it)
In the 70's a film entitled "Run Brother Run" starring Lincoln Kirkpatrick was way ahead of it's time(specifically in terms of some of the characters in the movie)
I love samurai flicks..so any that star Tishiro Mifune will do...films such as the magnificent 7 is based on a samurai film (among many others). One of his films Red Beard is brilliant....and deep (not a samurai film but really good)
Did you see spike lee's documentary about the bombing of the church in birmingham (4 girls, i think, was the title) should have won the academy award that year
Have you seen sounder.
enough....i will add more as i think of them

Thanks Deepy

You have a very well rounded selection of cinema to check out. Like you, I'm also a fan of Tishiro Mifune. Here in NYC, every saturday morning at 9. The Indedendant Film channel features what is called samurai saturdays. Maybe you've seen it as well.

There's an African American author, named Rinoko Rashidi who wrote a book about the african presence in early asia. He documented how the first samurai were black, and that how the samurai have proverbs about how preferable it is to have black blood to make an excellent samurai.

I've seen pictures of several samurai in this book, and they are very dark, much darker most people would suspect.
