View Full Version : Black Men : Brothers Only Voice Chat?
Destee 01-27-2004, 07:51 PM Hello My Brothers !!!!!
This is so long overdue, a forum just for you!!!
The next question is, would you be interested in your own "Brothers Only Voice Chat?"
We currently have a "Sisters Only Voice Chat," which is held on Tuesday nights at 8 pm ET. We discuss issues that help strengthen us, and allow us to heal from the many assaults placed on the shoulders of Black women. We also share in the successes of our lives, however small, and encourage each other as we bond, laugh, cry, and embrace during this special time of ours.
How many Brothers in the Family would be interested in having your own special time to bond together? Perhaps i shouldn't word it like that, huh? Sounds kinda feminine. But yall know what i mean.
We have enough Brothers on the Moderating Team to insure that only Brothers would be present. In Sister Chat we require everyone to have a working mic and come to the mic, in order to prove that they are in fact female. I don't know if you all would want this, but that's what we do. You're welcome to do it however you please.
I'm excited about this, even though i won't be able to attend. I know that there are lots of young men that don't have positive, encouraging, and wise male role models in their life. It would be a blessing to my soul if they were able to get even a small bit of this, from our community.
You can schedule your chat any time something is not already scheduled. You can view all scheduled "classes" here: Current Class Schedule (http://destee.com/forums/calendar.php).
So please ... let me know. It's yours if you want it.
Much Love and Peace.

kenyatta 01-27-2004, 08:38 PM I wanted to respond to your initial offer, but I am STILL unable to get on any chat rooms. For some reason I can not get registered by the site...which keeps blinking whenever I seek to register or click the Need Help icon. Since I couldn't get registerd by the site, I made a voice wav of some of my works, but I haven't learned to UPLOAD it yet so that I can submit it.
Still Waiting.

Destee 01-27-2004, 09:47 PM Brother Kenyatta ... i'm not sure what you're experiencing, but i'm going to give you the step by step procedure for entering voice chat and you can tell me at which step you get stuck ... okay?
1. go to www.destee.com/chat
this is the main chat login page
2. enter your username and click on ENTER
you could register first, get a password mailed to you and click on Members Login ... but we're skipping that right now ... it's not needed to enter voice chat
3. then click on Start Voice Chat
this button will appear after you do the above
4. Click Yes / OK to accept the plugin
a black page should appear, with text on it telling you about the plugin you must accept for the chat to load properly. Once the prompt comes for the plugin, click yes to accept it, it is safe. It may take a moment for the prompt to appear and another few moments for it to download.
5. You will be presented with a page that shows our 2 rooms
one room is OPEN MIC and the other is CLASSES ... click on OPEN MIC and you should be taken right into the room. We play music in that room, read poetry, discuss, sing, whatever we want. We hold classes in the CLASSES room, and Sister Chat is currently going on ... Sisters Only, so don't go in that one tonight.
6. Click on the room of your choice and come on in!
That's it Brother Kenyatta. If you have trouble at any step, please let me know which one and i'll be able to help better.
Looking forward to enjoying your company in voice chat.

Destee 01-28-2004, 12:06 AM I'd like to add, just in case there's not enough male Moderators to keep the Sisters out, i am more than willing to come in and stand guard ... :)

HODEE 01-28-2004, 01:05 AM I think it would be great... at first it may be slow... but as the younger members come aboard... and we get to share with them alternatives and solutions to things... it may work very well.
Some young men may not have a father figure. Some may just need some advise on something that happened... we can vent... discuss the issues... of our nation that affect us. Say things like guys like to put it... talking about real issues... If you are in trouble financially... we can talk and offer some alternative solutions. If we want change... we can find agreement that we will email those responsible that are elected officials... and let them know they should do what they are suppose to or give up that tax payer job.. I'm a tax payer... and I'm their boss... you are too.
Moving city to city... letting it be known... that we are a force to reckon with... because we won’t go away. Moving the issue up the channels and to the appropriate ears. Meeting again to discuss the results obtained... in every case. It’s for the children guys... mine yours... and some I don't even know... but they need us to correct the system. Work the plan and plan to work the system. Staying at all times professional... because we are.
Race, issues we face in the work world... how we handle these things... some fears every everybody face once in a while... ( yea.. we have fears.. most men ( black men ) are not being treated right or fair at work.. they have this fear that they must take it cause they are going to lose their jobs.. well let me say .. you gonna lose it anyway, if they don't want you there. So keep your dignity and let them know they picked the wrong man to confront) there are agencies that control everyone and everything... and I know of many.
We can discuss some true concerns we may have for our community or nation. Discuss our view of where we find ourselves... in America today, and ways to improve even if that is taking a new view, of how to deal until we can work and find solutions... I personally know a lot of legal... things... and my blood boils when injustice is done to anyone...
The truth brothers is... you only have to make it thru the night.. Then a new day is there for you to shape, work your plan, melt solutions and see them grow... right before your eyes... I swear ain't nothing like seeing your dreams come true... or a plan you put in place unfold...and work.
I like the idea... and like Destee said... we may want to have only men there... at first... Personally it doesn't matter to me who joins in... You just better be able to take and hear the truth. Knowing it is constructive and beneficial coming with love... from others trying to build...
Serious Brothers... strong brothers...in one place... can do a lot. So let’s bat this around... Sunday nights are good... so you start your week... and have time for your plans to unfold...
Black Men all over the Nation coming together in one place... that is powerful....
Martin had this internet in his dream... It is our vehicle.
oldsoul 01-28-2004, 06:31 AM I'm still learning this whole chat thing but I'd be willing to participate as much as I can.
I can be contacted at OldSoul@BLACKLAND.zzn.com
Destee 01-28-2004, 05:55 PM Brother OldSoul ... please come into voice chat (http://destee.com/chat), that's the first step.

This follow up is because something did come up this weekend, and it also had me reflecting on the weekend as a whole. Many of us have families, and even those without families. Have commitments, that require certain things be done during the weekend.
Sunday is the day most are returning from family functions, those commitments and leisure activity. In my case I found it hard to be back in time on Sunday, and participate in the meetings.
I checked the calender. Wednesday night seems to be open. I am available, and I do have more control on my individual time during the weeknights. I see no problem in scheduling the meetings, on Wednesday nights @8PM EST.
I'm not the only interested individual here, if anyone else wanted a different day, or a better time suited that individual. I have no problem with that. I totally understand. I'm flexible like I said any night of the week. I'm home and finished with all commitments by evenings end.
I know I would enjoy spending time sharing information and idea's with my other brothers here on Destee. So I'm looking forward to this.
Destee thanks too for being so understanding and flexible.
Destee 02-01-2004, 06:37 PM Brother HODEE ... we are oh so very flexibile! In our effort to accomodate the majority of our Brothers, additional changes may be necessary, that's fine. None of this, our entire community, has come without adjustments being made all along the way. It's all good.
I have made our "Brothers Only Voice Chat (http://www.destee.com/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=23)" a part of our regularly scheduled events and created a thread in the Online Classes Forum.
Brother OldSoul ... such a pleasure to hear your voice and enjoy your company in voice chat ... looking forward to much more.
Wednesday @ 8 pm ET it is.
If there is anything else i can do, just let me know.

Destee 02-16-2004, 11:30 PM My Dear Darling Brothers ... the day for Brothers Only Voice Chat has been changed to ... TUESDAYS @ 8 PM ET in the OPEN MIC VOICE CHAT ROOM ... This change was needed to accomodate another class and use our time more efficiently, as it is hard to schedule a class around Sister / Brother Chat.
So ... Sisters will meet on Tuesday @ 8 pm ET ... in the CLASSES VOICE CHAT ROOM ... and Brothers will meet on Tuesday @ 8 pm ET ... in the OPEN MIC VOICE CHAT ROOM.
Each Session will last from 8 pm - 10 pm ET ... at that point, we'll all convene in the OPEN MIC VOICE CHAT ROOM to discuss whatever we'd like, listen to music ... yall know how we live.
WEDNESDAYS @ 8 PM ET ... we will have a new class called ... INTERNET 101 with BROTHER GLAD that begins @ 8 pm ET ... probably for an hour or so ... the details are sketchy but class is on for Wednesay night ... Brother Glad will be providing a more detailed class introduction at his earliest convenience.
So ... SISTERS AND BROTHERS ARE ON THE SAME NIGHT!
Hope this doesn't upset too many schedules.
As always, if you have any questions ... i'm right here.
Much Love and Peace.

NNQueen 02-17-2004, 10:26 AM I'm curious, will the brothers be posting their weekkly topics similar to the new sister format?

NNQueen 02-19-2004, 02:45 PM It was really nice for sisters after Sister Chat to meet up with brothers after Brother Chat last Tuesday. The exchange of information regarding that night's topics was interesting and informative. We demonstrated mutual respect and admiration for our topics and I hope we can share like that more often.
Again, I extend my hand to help my brothers get organized if ever they should need it.
Peace!

Alkebulan 02-27-2004, 11:17 AM hi sister nnqueen  hi sister destee
it was a pleasure 2 hv the benefit of sister nnqueen & sister destee's sagacious suggestions 2 help us better organize bro chats. sister nnqueen provided us w a useful blueprint which cld lay the groundwork for a much needed upgrade n our discussion 4mat. thank u sister nnqueen. i don't kno what responses u hv received already, but i want u 2 kno, this bro, at least, appreciates ur efforts n that direction.
update: last bro chat, i asked all n attendance 2 preapre a short list of topics of concern 2 them & bring it 2 the next chat, or, post it here. that shld enable us 2 compare notes & hopefully, w/n a wk or 2, post a suggested schedule of bro chat topics. other considerations cld include: a designated moderator, or a couple of them - 2 help us sta on point & curb verbosity, as well as helping us 2 end on time (something we've had difficulty w the last 3 wk's :( ), rotation of guest moderators; volunteer note taker's 2 present the recap when the sister's join us as well as posting the recap here so others, unable 2 attend the chat can read what they missed, or at least it's essence; encouagement of additional bro's, seen n voice chat, but mia 4 bro chat cld b encouraged 2 'get w the program' , f possible.
my thanks 2 bro hodee 4 his prolific handling of bro chat last wk, & of course our thanks go out 2 sister destee 4 making it all possible. 1 thing, sister destee, u nd 2 develop 'invisible mode' 4 urself so u can b n any room, anytime (i kno, u already can b when u wish) unobserved 2 check out the goings on 4 yaself & make sure everythings 'copa setta'
i agree w sister nnqueen, the flo that eve & interchange of obervations was particularly stimulating & constructive, we shld try 2 make that a regular feature of tues eve voice chats. now that's what i call a  w a purpose! may take us some time 2 'catch up' w sister chat, but we're workin on it. meantime, thanks 4 ur help.
NNQueen 03-09-2004, 04:30 PM Yoohoo...Brothers? How are things coming with you all getting organized? Are we on tonight? Sisters will be coming to visit you relaxed and refreshed. Check out the SISTER CHAT thread in our Forum. Ooohhhhmmm
See you all later! :toast:

caramelpython 03-11-2004, 11:08 PM Ok Brothers,
We need all of our brothers to come and show support for brother chat, that is our time to share our thoughts and feelings about different issues.
I have a suggestion abouts next weeks topic and if I have to host it I'm good with this also. My topic would be "Fatherhood and how we could become stronger figures towards our children"
Let me know what u fellas think.
I'm looking foward this one indeed :peace:
panafrica 03-14-2004, 07:43 PM Good topic. Although I have technical problems with the voicechat (for some reason I can only stay on for a few minutes at a time, before I get booted), I would be more than willing to come to the Brother Chat. However, Tuesdays are a very bad night for me. Unless it is moved to another night, I can't participate.
Changes_Changes 03-15-2004, 07:23 AM i like that topic - u got my vote

Alkebulan 04-01-2004, 03:28 PM hi brothers
i wanted also 2 make a comment regarding the offer of assistance organizing our chats sincerely & generously made by sisters nnqueen & destee. i believe we shld thank them & welcome their participation w open arms. i continually hear about how much longer they've been hving sister chat, well, y not benefit from the lessons they've learned. or, do we hv 2 go thru the entire trial & error process by ourselves, repeating numerous blunders they've already made? they r not trying 2 'infiltrate' our chats or 'invade' our domain, f i'm not mistaken, it was the sisters who 1st suggested bro chat.
i wld further like 2 suggest that we occasionally hv combined bro & sis chat's 2 discuss, n an organized, controlled & moderated manner, issues of mutual interest & benefit. let me give u an example n the field i'm most familiar with. i recently attended a conference on women's health.
the major issues affecting women's health: heterosexual trasmitted disease (dz), body image, eating disorders, violence against women, drug use, smoking, depression, stress related dz, stress management. we r working longer hrs, w less time 2 take care of self, less participation n civic & sometimes social activity, we r discovering social empowerment can lead 2 new forms of stress, not that disempowerment is not stressful, its very stressful, but as more women assume positions of power & control we c empowerment can b stressful as well.
major changes n how we r addressing womens health: really got started after wwII: men r fond of saying, 'what more do women want, they already liv 6 yrs longer than we do'. but f we understood y inspite of the disadvantages under which women labor n terms of allocation of resources, & discrimination & obsticles n the workplace, we might b able 2 xtend the advanteges 2 men so we might b around 2 keep them compnay.
2day, over 60% of adults r overweight, 30% r obese , w children, 13% r considered obese, we hv type 2 diabetes, which used 2 b called adult onset which we can't even use that term anymore b/c we hv children w it, & y is that? we're eating incredible amounts of food. they're ez, convienient, & prepared 4 us. @ fast food emporiums supersize comes cheap, it seems, & so we do it w/o thinking, do i really nd those additional calories? we give more thought 2 whether it's a good value $ wise, than f it's good 4 our bodies & longevity. whats happeneing 2 our chilren & adults w xercise? we're lucky f we can get ppl 2 walk 20 - 30 min a day 4 or 5 times a wk. there r so many 'labor saving' devices, everythings automated or electrical, some schools don't even hv pe anymore, our children r attracted 2 computers, gameboys, playstations, no tennis, no bikeriding. xercise 4 all children has diminished n this country over the last 2 generations, & too many ppl hvn't noticed any change.
most ppl think breast cancer is the # 1 killer 4 women, it isn't. it's heart dz 4 all women. women are living longer & picking up all our bad habits. smoking, not xercising, & overeating hv been combinating 2 kill men 4 decades, & women r catching up w a vengence . more women r becoming older & presenting new health management challenges b/c obesity doesen't just affect hrt & kidnesy & eyes, it also affects the lungs & joints & body image issues. and i realize some females will consider this a sexist statement, but there is a mental health component b/c womens brains r wired diferently than men. just like hormones affect breasts & estrogen affects reproductve organs, it also affects the brain & so we nd 2 look @ wholeistic integrated isssues & not just separate components. public health & prevention r prime. f u walk 20 - 30 min a day 4 to 5 times a wk & u lose 10 - 15 lbs ur chances of getting diabetes r reduced 60% , from that alone.
there was a poll of 560 young women under 45, & 1 of the ? s asked was, what did they consider themselves most likely 2 die from? the answers were: breast cancer, & reproductive ca. but the reality is what she is most likely 2 die from actually is: #1. car accident & #2. heart dz, in that order, 4 that age group. it's another aspect al2gether whether or not they r actually taking measures 2 prevent the risks they perceived themselves at risk 4 from occurring. human papilloma virus is sexually transmitted & has a well defined correlation b/t it & cervical cancer (ca). pap smears reduce the mortality of cervical ca by 70% or 80% but there r b/t 30 & 50 strains of the virus & 70% of sexually active ppl hv at least 1 of those virus. cervical ca is now considered a sexually transmitted dz, & there is no longer a ? that inceasing the # of partners over the course of one's life increases the risk of exposure.
we're dealing w some xtrodanary lifestyle changes . n 1900 a typical 1st menstruation occurred @15 or 16yo & young women married as a virgin @ 21 or 22. 2day periods start earlier & 1st sex is much earlier & that has caused enourmous changes & problems we r dealing w n the medical field. the age of 1st intercourse seems 2 b 'holding' (4 now) @ 15 or 16, but middle school girls r hving oral sex at an alarming rate. n some cases it's coercive or involuntary. the hyman & virginity don't seem 2 b that important & there isn't a clear sexual code of ethics 4 our teenagers & pre-adolecents. from a historical perspective just teaching abstinance isn't going 2 work, & it nvr has.
a wholeistic perspective is needed. it's much more than just about a womans breasts & reporoductive organs. women liv longer but breakdwn more. males produce most of the drugs but women r the ones that take most of the medicine. violence against women is a major public health issue 4 individual women not just interesting demography. we hv only been at the business of looking at women 4 about a decade n clinical trials & studies, yet thats the only way they can benefit from them. even the digestive tract 4 women is different. u'd b amazed at the kinds of issues that get research funding sometimes. there was a study about passing out chewing gum 2 soldiers n combat n the military, b/c the heightened anxiety levels tended 2 dry their mouth & reduce focus, & they discovered mens oral salivation is twice that of women, mayb women n combat shld b even more careful 2 hv special gum n combat. & its not just women as a whole either, there r differences b/t mex/am & afam women, they hv different rates of diabetes & they hv different cultural issues.
health literacy is the key 2 empower women 2 lrn about simple issues & take control of their own health & take steps of prevention that will make things better 4 themselves & their familys.
violence against women has b/c the #1 issue on womens minds along w economic security, b/c the media has n fact played an important role n driving that issue. much less dramtic but equally important is the fact that women r 20% - 70% more likely 2 get lung ca than men, smoke 4 smoke (nih study). there is also the aspect of taking personal responsiblity 4 activism on womens health. it's ez 2 say the media ought 2 do it, y aren't they reporting, y don't i know, etc. the whole idea of preventive care is being ignored.
some of the problems: lack of access; inadequate insurance coverage; a system that emphasis treatment instead of prevention; the commercialization of health care hv made us all pay a price; we hv 2 think about education & knowledge more broadly; patient quote: when i was diagnosed w breast ca, there i was surrounded by loved ones, but when something like that happens, u r alone n the most profound way u can b alone. u go n2 a dark tunnel, u ve got 2 do this by urself, ppl can bring u flowers, but u r alone, the only person who s going 2 help u is u. rather than feel as helpless & frightened as this situation bekons u 2 feel, a health pro can launch a lifeline & actually explain what's happening & what the meds r suppposed 2 do, etc. when some1 is ill or struggleing w stressful diagnostic tests, feeling alone can't help n the recovery process.
Q: is there a disparity b/t health care given 2 men & women? most of the panel felt that there was. there is insufficient info on sex & gender about how women r different & the same as men. is there discriination against women? yes, n terms of the focus on prevention. we r not focused on a needs based & public health based approach as much as a profit based approach 2 solving our health & medical problems. it used 2b said, necessity was the mother of invention, & now it seems like invention is the mother of necessity, from a health perspective. women hv 2 step back & say, what r our needs & r the research $ going 2 those places. even environmental issue's play a role b/c there is a strong correlation emerging b/t lo income area's & incidence of asthma & not jus pandemical, but morbitity & mortality as well.
we liv n a country still full of racism, sexism, homophobia, & it influences not only access but the treatments ppl r given. what about the term single parent: f u hv a child & u r raising a child alone u r a dbl parent, u r mother & father, u make decisions & do the best u can. ppl hv gr8 sympathy 4 men who do it alone but disdain 4 women who do it alone.
here is one of the best examples of research disparity: estrogens & heart dz. f we go back about 40 yrs there was this book: feminine 4ever, it observed women rarely get a hrt attack till the age of 50, but then they get a lot of them. male physcians assumed women r getting many more heart atacks b/c they're losing the estrogen from their ovaries (from the book, lectures, etc), there4 estrogens protect against hrt dz. who were the 1st ppl the cardiologists studied? not women, but men. n fact, the 1st xcellent study of estrogen & heart dz was pub n '63: the coronary drug project. they found, f u giv estrogen 2 men who already hv hrt dz, u further increase their risk of hrt dz. n that same decade estrogen was given 2 men w prostate ca, but it doesen't prolong their life, they jus die of heart dz nstead of prostate ca. n the 70's we learned that estrogen n the pill form can lead 2 an increase n hrt dz, but we also learned it was dose related.
n the 80 s observational studies (non randomized, non emperical) suggested that estrogen prevented hrt dz. n the 90's 1 of the companys that make estrogen, thought they wld like 2 get fda approval 2 market estrogen as preventive 4 hrt dz (the profit motive again). & the fda said no at that time. then the company designed a study & the nih gv funds 4 the study. at the end of the drug co study, after 5 yrs, it showed that estrogen increased the risk of hrt dz. so, women had 2 wait 35 yrs 2 obtain the same information that was availible 2 men, that estrogen increased the risk of hrt dz. that study occurred when the nih had a woman as director (the only time) who was a cardiologist.
health insurance: how r women served or ill served?: women r more dependant on either their spouses or medicare / medicaid pulbic health programs. f they lose there spouse or lose their elegibility, they're more vulnerable. a rand corp study from 1993, the typical doctor spends an av. of 3 min talking 2 pts b4 prescribing a psychopharmacological drug 4 them. some women felt their problems were trivialized by that. 2day, the rate of depression has escalated significantly. woman make up the majority of patient visits n the u.s. & around the world.
tobacco use is crucial. companys like phllp morris, the largest tobacco company n the world, r concerned about their image, they ve renamed themselves, (the alphea group or something like that) u wonder y there s so much smoking n a movie? they pay film directors $500,000 2 cover the cost of a set n a movie, so that they'll script n smokeing scene when it wasn't there originally. it s a form of infiltration n2 the mass media, & its subtle. over half of what comes out n the 'news' originates n a pr firm of a company somewhere. there r horrible disparities b/t access & funding 4 care amoung the poor which dispoportately affects women & their children. of the last 10 druges that were w/drawn from the market, 8 of them affected women disproportiately. consider how dz affects the family, b/c its the women who actually supplies the nurturing 2 the fam, even f both parents work, its the women that provides the care 4 the sick child, assumes the responsibilty not only 4 her own parents, but the husbands parents (n many cases) as well, its an added pressure & load on women.
my point is, this is a crossover issue w many branches but a single root. this issue has dramatic implications 4 both genders. the importance of taking responsibilty on matters of health, & becoming advocates n groups particularly, & activists 4 health. preventive medicine while much less dramatic or heroic, is much more cost effective & long term beneficial. but right now, the health care system is not working 4 any1.

caramelpython 04-06-2004, 02:01 PM My brothers I am sorry But I will be unabel to attend the Brothers chat tonight because Of some personal issues I have to settel this evening. I do hope To hear how it goes tomorrow or even later on this evening I will try to make it before 10pm. I was very proud of our last session and how it flowed very smoothly and with a sense of order, I hope it will continue this way.
Destee 03-21-2005, 02:25 PM Hello Brothers,
Are you interested in starting the "Brothers Only" chat back up again?
We'd need at least one of you to be willing to faciliate the chat each week. Basically facilitating consists of agreeing to try and be present each week, while guiding and leading the chat. No special knowledge or wisdom is needed, just a love for our people, and a desire to see us heal from some of the wounds we have.
If you've not been in our chat room yet, please check it out ... it's voice chat ... we can actually hear each other and it pretty awesome! You can get there by going to this link ... www.destee.com/chat (http://www.destee.com/chat).
Let me know Brothers ... whatcha think?

panafrica 03-22-2005, 07:02 AM I can't make the commitment to facilitate, but I would try to come as often as possible.

Destee 12-07-2005, 10:42 AM No one came!
That's not true Pan. Brothers came. There were several Brothers Only Voice Chats.
While i wasn't in them, as Sister's Chat took place at the same time, in another room ... there were many times that we all came together after the sessions ended, discussing in general what we talked about privately (those things that were appropriate to be discussed in mixed company).
If i remember properly, the Brother's Chat was in need of a new facilitator, as Brother Python was not able to keep doing it. Some of the Brothers complained about the chat not having any real structure. This could have been due to the fact that there was no facilitator, and the effort was new ... but Brothers did come.
Actually, Sister's Chat is / was in need of a new facilitator as well.
I think that's basically why we stopped having them.
We can start them up again any time a Brother is willing to lead the session.
I'd do it myself, but uhhhh ... well ... i can't. :)

panafrica 12-07-2005, 01:45 PM That's not true Pan.

Let me rephrase that then, attendance was low. But I think with an increase in male members, the idea is worth another try!
We can start them up again any time a Brother is willing to lead the session.
*raises hand*
I'll do it!
