that African-Americans spend millions of dollars killing themselves? They spend millions on swine meat and other dead animal flesh, millions on alcohol, and millions on tobacco. Hundreds of thousands of African-Americans die each year from strokes, high blood pressure, heart attacks, cirrhosis of the liver (caused by excessive alcohol consumption), lung cancer (caused by cigarette smoking), arteriosclerosis (hardening of the blood arteries caused by fat in the bloodstream from the consumption of animal flesh and animal by-products), sugar diabetes, kidney diseases, ulcers, stomach and colon cancers, etc. Yet they keep on eatin’ them pork chops and ham (the pig’s butt!), drinkin’ that Johnny Walker “Dead,” and smokin’ them cigs... When will they ever learn?

that common salt is NOT a seasoning? It is a preservative that is used for seasoning. Garlic, pepper and onions are natural seasonings, because they grow, as do herbs and spices. Salt does not grow – it accumulates, which is why excessive use of this preservative is dangerous to your health (salt does the same thing in the body). Wherever there are large deposits of salt on this planet you will see nothing growing. Birds do not even fly over the Dead Sea, because it is a sea of salt, and nothing lives in it...

that scientists have found cancer-causing nitrosomines in whiskey and hog bile in beer? No wonder the manufacturers of these poisons balked at consumers’ demands for them to list the ingredients of whiskey and beer on their labels. Check out the eyes of an alcoholic or someone you know who consumes large amounts of alcohol. This is why all a doctor has to do is look into your eyes to know whether or not you are an alcoholic, or if you consume excessive amounts of this deadly poison...

that love is self-preservation? This is the true meaning of the word, and this statement cannot be disputed. Before you can love anybody else you must first love yourself, and loving yourself means that you have knowledge of the fact that your body is the temple of God’s spirit – its dwelling place – therefore you must keep it clean. This means that nothing should ever enter the temple (your body) that would pollute, contaminate, or harm it (e.g., alcohol, tobacco, chemicals, hard drugs, swine meat and other dead animal flesh)...

that the spirit of God, confined in a diseased, deficient, unhealthy brain – poisoned with the waste products of gluttony, wrong eating and wrong living – is utterly unable to produce harmonious thought? The lower brain (cerebellum), in an equally imperfect condition, cannot give birth to a vibration or current of energy that is as constructive as is necessary. For the most part the energy is used in a negative, destructive way. Thoughts are imperfect and spasmodic, and the acts which follow are equally so...

True haiku...happened on the side of the highway down from my house five years ago.
It is appointed for every man to die once...then comes judgment.
Truth...My sister in law's grandmother is guilty of eating some of the things you say is killing African Americans. Today she is 114 years old. Lives at home with my sister in law's mother who is 84
years old and eat dat stuff up deah what you was talkin bout.
So what is my point? It is good to eat right but I won't bet my life on it. I'll simply do it to feel better, but I do intend to enjoy myself sometime wit soma dat fried catfish, collards, turnips and mustards cooked together and somthered in dem hamhocks...my, my, my, my, my. Pray for me  I sho need it. But I'm here to tell you that I live and exist by the grace of God...not vitamins...grace takes up the slack.
I do appreciate however, all of the facts you have provided above. But I can't even keep the law of the old testament, therefore I recieve grace and mercy thru Jesus Christ, in my time of need. Cause in reality, if I abide by all of your rules for nutrition, I will feel better...but I will still die sooner or later. I am however, a nutrition fanatic believe it or not. But I do get weak before a table of soul food prepared by James.
I won't resist his food no more than I will his loving. Both of them are powerfully potent...

Nia Maishani 03-12-2002, 11:30 PM If you didn't already mention...
The average American consumes a great deal more protein than is essential, which is directly attributable to meat consumption.
Excess protein promotes tumors, and additionally, toxins are stored around vital organs, wherever excess fat is stored. Toxins promote dis-eases. Cow's milk is known to cause effeminization of males. Eggs nowadays are not real eggs (produced by mating of chicken and hen), nor is most meat; everything is fast becoming genetically modified (GMOs). White sugar is no less a drug than cocaine or heroine, just a different and milder effect. Cigarrettes are addictive not because of the nicotine, but because they contain opium. Unbelieveable, right? Well, don't believe it; just keep believing those who capitalize off your ignorance. How does the adage go? Our people perish for lack of knowledge?
dbaraka 03-13-2002, 12:07 AM Agil,I do agree with you.A lot of what you say is covered in a book written by Llaila O. Africa(African Holistic Health). Nia Maishani 03-13-2002, 12:57 AM Love and Awareness to all present,
Always good to see you in the forums, DBaraka. There is nothing at all personal in this discussion; it's all love. In my opinion, as extensions of the Creator, we have an obligation to treat and care for ourselves and one another accordingly. Stuffing our faces and temples with putrefied animal carcass and drugs and other harmful substances, and living sloven or health-risking lifestyles is not the way, whether we will live 5 years or 105 years. Not only are the aforementioned substances harmful to the physical being, but to the spiritual being (the essence of the person) as well. As someone who chooses to live the Spiritual Life, I have no intention of corrupting my spirit by allowing corruption into my body or mind. It is an everyday discipline to guard one's spirit against those poisons.
Thank you Nia Maishani for your enlightening discourses...
And thank you, dbaraka. Yes, I am quite familiar with Sister Laila O. Africa and African Holistic Health...

Do you know the difference between margarine and butter?
Both have the same amount of calories. Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams, compared to 5 grams for margarine.
Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.
Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods. Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added!
Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.
Butter has been around for centuries, where margarine has been around for less than 100 years.
Now for Margarine...
Very high in trans-fatty acids...
Triple risk of coronary heart disease...
Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol); lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)...
Increases the risk of cancers by up to five-fold...
Lowers quality of breast milk...
Decreases immune response...
Decreases insulin response...
And here is the most disturbing fact...
Margarine is but one molecule away from being plastic...
This fact alone was enough to have me think about avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance). You can try this yourself:
Purchase a tub of margarine and leave in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things: no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies on or near it (that should tell you something). It does not rot or smell differently. It has no nutritional value; nothing will grow on it...not even those teeny-weeny micro-organisms will a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic...

This seems to be a very powerful, informative and very necessary question, basically, what do we know or do not know. I do know that margarine is one of the most destructive things you can put in your body and I’m glad you put this post in a short, concise and reproducible form. Though, I am aware of many of the things that you have eluded too, it is still good to be reminded and also get some extra information about margarine.
I need to do some research or you might have this on hand, how margarine, like many other destructive “unnatural” foods have multiple, what I would call, “scientific pseudonyms” so the consumer doesn’t know he is getting trans fatty acids/saturated fats, hydrogenized veg. oils, MSG and many other debilitating toxins or non-digestible substances, when they are reading the labels of their food purchases.
We need to always read the ingredients of everything we buy, even the products that are deemed to be natural or organic and know the “lingo” and the acceptable or the "more acceptable" standards.
I hope this thread has a long life; for there is a lot black people take for granted and there is a lot we just don’t know.
Peace,
Sun Ship
Sun Ship 02-07-2004, 11:22 AM Peace,
I was rumbling through some notes and found the title of a book; I believe deals with the misrepresentation of food additives and their destructive compounds. I remember being impressed by this author in an interview many years ago.
Excitotoxins : the taste that kills

Sun Ship 02-07-2004, 11:59 AM Here is an example of what I was eluding to:
Hidden Sources of MSG
The glutamate manufacturers and the processed food industries are always on a quest to disguise MSG added to food. Below is a partial list of the most common names for disguised MSG. Remember also that the powerful excitotoxins aspartame and L-cysteine are frequently added to foods and according to FDA rules require no labeling at all.
Additives that always contain MSG:
Monosodium Glutamate
Hydrolyzed Plant Protein
Calcium Caseinate
Textured Protein
Hydrolyzed Oat Flour
Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein
Hydrolyzed Plant Protein Extract
Sodium Caseinate
Yeast Extract
Autolyzed Yeast
Additives that frequently contain MSG:
Malt Extract
Bouillon
Stock
Natural Flavoring
Seasoning
Malt Flavoring
Broth
Flavoring
Natural Beef or Chicken
Flavoring Spices
Additives that may contain MSG or excitotoxins:
Carrageenan Enzymes
Soy Protein Concentrate
Soy Protein Isolate
Whey Protein Concentrate

Thank you so much for this information. Along with the insight provided by other members in this post. I've been involved in a program the last month, changing my eating habits, things that I eat, so this is very helpful to me. Blessings.
You're quite welcome, jazzy...and I wish you success as you endeavor to pay more attention to the temple of the spirit...which is your body. It is where God lives...

Naw, I ain mad at cha :luvv: But I still hold to my logic. Eating ham does not necessarily shorten one's live nor does it lengthen it. Simple as that. I believe in the theory of moderation for myself. A little ham, some grilled chicken, some fried fish every now and then, some collard, turnips and mustards, some peas, some homemade biscuits, a lot of spirulina (dark greens that grow on top of water , some HGH (sprayed under the tongue), 3000 milligrams of vitamin C daily (powdered form).
Eating too many veggies can be unhealthy, just as eating too many hamhocks. I believe in living a balanced life, so I don't smoke, drink alcohol, smoke pot or indulge in unhealthy behaviours. The spirulina that I drink literally cleanses my system of the unhealthy cholesterol that I may ingest from time to time. Thus, my cholesterol levels are very low. Of course the good HDL is at healthy levels also. I also love chocolate, but I only eat it every now and then.
Yesterday, I had a grilled chicken salad. Lawd, was it good. It had cumbers, bell peppers, rich ripe tomatoes, garlic, grilled chicken of course and Romaine lettuce. I used buttermilk ranch. This is my favorite way to eat during the week, but on weekends I deviate. This past Sunday, passed up the ribs for some fried crablegs. For those who hate swine, I know crabs are no better, but lawd was dey good! I also had grilled shrimp. For those who hate swine, shrimp is also at the top of their list too. They didn't have any cat fish, but I sho would have gotten soma dat too and I know yall ain wit the cat fish either. To a muslim, all of these things is pure sin but to me it is pure delight.
As long as I do not eat like a hog, I will eat some from time to time.
Sorry guys...but the greens and the barbeque stays.
But don't let me bother you. You go ahead and eat the way you feel YOU should. After all, either way certainly won't hurt you if you keep everything balanced. That is very key. Don't overindulge in anything or it will have negative effects.
To a Muslim, all of these things (swine, shrimp, catfish) is pure sin, but to me it is pure delight.God admonishes us to not eat scavengers in the Bible and the Qur'an, Joyce. All food, according to Islamic law, should be “halal,” i.e., allowed by the law, and “tayyib,” i.e., good, pure, wholesome and agreeable. Under the latter condition sometimes even lawful things become forbidden. For example, if a Muslim contracts colon cancer (caused by animal flesh putrefying in the colon), or if a Muslim sister contracts vaginal cancer from consuming excessive amounts of beef, then that beef – though lawful – becomes forbidden...
I believe that one who is striving for spiritual attainment should abstain from all that pertains to the animal, and this means the killing and eating of them also. All life is sacred, and all life comes from God, and we have no right to destroy it. Killing animals is the destruction of life, and therefore in direct defiance of the Supreme Law of the Universe.
I also believe that all the prophets were vegetarians – from Abraham to Jesus). God is everywhere, thus His spirit dwells in us, and just as I wouldn’t want any dead animals in my home, where I live, God does not want dead animals in His temple (your body), where His spirit dwells...
The Bible does not simply say, “Thou shalt not kill humans.” It says broadly, “Thou shalt not kill.” When there is no food, someone may eat animal flesh in order to keep from starving. That is another thing. But it is most sinful to regularly maintain slaughterhouses just to satisfy the human tongue.
There are some Muslims who say that Qur’an enjoins the eating of some animal flesh, and this is true, but let us look at this enjoinment in its proper perspective:
The Qur’an does not say that you must eat animal flesh; it says that there is some animal flesh that you can eat. The Qur'anic enjoinment of the eating of animal flesh takes into account the geographical area and the environmental conditions in which one lives, for it would be impossible for an Eskimo to be a vegetarian...
The same can be said of the desert tribes of northern Africa and the Bedouin tribes of Saudi Arabia, where there is little or no vegetation. Many millions of people inhabit lands where there is little or no vegetation, and they are, or course, exempt from the Universal Law. In His infinite wisdom Allah (swt) has provided us with a holy book prescribed for all mankind, and the Holy Qur’an was written in a country whose mean temperature is 85º Fahrenheit year 'round!
It is impossible for a vegetarian to contract colon cancer, because vegetables, fruits and grains pass through the colon. There have also been many reports of diseased fish being caught with cancerous gills that are cut out and then sent to market to be sold. These are the reasons why a Muslim vegetarian abstains from not only the forbidden, but even that which is lawful.
As a student of nutrition, I am firmly convinced that in addition to abstaining from all animal flesh as food, we should never eat anything white. White food is refined, processed and denatured (e.g., salt, sugar, milk, white flour and all white-flour products, and also eggs, which contain large amounts of cholesterol). These kinds of foods – in addition to the heavy consumption of animal flesh – are mainly responsible for the hundreds of thousands of deaths that occur each year due to high blood pressure, strokes, stomach and colon cancer, and heart attacks due to arteriosclerosis, which is the hardening of the arteries due to too much animal fat and cholesterol in the bloodstream. Simply put, animal flesh and white food is killing us, and we are digging our graves with our teeth!
We must eat what God intended for us to eat, i.e., fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, honey and natural juices; foods that provide optimum health for His created beings. The fact is, we need nothing else to sustain us throughout our existence on this planet...

I've been digging what you have been saying so far.
That was a revelation about salt. I had never thought of it that way. I thought it was safe for me to eat salt because my blood pressure has always been on the low side of normal--about as low as it can get and still be in the normal range. So I put salt in my water during the hottest part of the summer to guard against dehydration in 100+ weather. But what you are saying is making me think twice about this. Three years ago my mother was hospitalized with high blood pressure and she tells me that she too had low pressure when she was younger so that too gave me pause.
Everything you have said so far I've taken in but this post confuses me a little bit. Would you actually advocate the consumption of butter which is made from milk? Both butter and margarine are just condiments. What, if anything, did our ancestors usee to moisten bread?
Everything you have said so far I've taken in but this post confuses me a little bit. Would you actually advocate the consumption of butter which is made from milk? No, I wouldn't...I was using "Smart Balance" for a while (as I stated at the end of the piece). Since then I have switched to "Olivio"...a spread that has the flavor and richness of real butter, yet is made from two of the healthiest oils on earth - olive oil and canola oil - a combination that would perform brilliantly where ordinary margarines fail.
HEALTH magazine named Olivio Premium Spread one of "The Ten Tastiest, Low-Fat Foods" in their July/August 2000 issue, reporting that it "has a rich, creamy, salty taste that will satisfy butter and margarine alike."
"What we Americans really need is a butter made out of something that is actually good for us...like olive oil." (Lee Iacocca)

I will be on the look out for olivio. We have five supermarkets in this one-horse town so it's got to be somewhere.
That is a very interesting article. Remarkable that they took the bran out and used it for animal feed while we are taught that bran is the healthy part of the bread.
