Spoken Work...who hears it...who speaks it...

I went to a poetry gig the other night. It seems the local small groups are finally banding together to bring more strength and exposure to this art in MN.

The first other Poets of the City was quite a success. The first featured poet was a cat from Jersey Talaam Acey. He does have a CD. I missed alot of his stuff because I was too fashionably late. . From what I did hear, it's a must buy!

I have a friend who very much a pessimist. He was blown away...

Anyway, are there any joints happening in your area?

Do you attend readings?

And can somebody please hit me off with some "the Last Poets"?!

Also, Cornel West has a soon to be released spoken word CD. I've checked out a couple of his joints...interesting.

This cat, Talaam Acey, he touched upon alot of things. One thing that interested me:
He mentioned that record company are buying back their music, further selling them into gold and platitum status. Which in return is a ploy to buy the people. US. He talked how we are feed this music we are hearing.

On my week out on the town, I also talked to a jazz musician. I went to the club after leaving another joint at closing. WE caught the last song of this musician set. Thing is there were only a few people in the club. You could see the sadness, the pain he felt. His people were there supporting him. I told him that we aren't giving jazz as an option in our radio and television stations. The next night I went to check out this musician at another club. It was packed. With white folx...

This cat Talaam Acey, he talked about how you can find every rap song talking about pimping, bi tching, pushing, and f ucking but you can't find any "Last Poets".

What have I been missing?

Are we losing our arts, jazz, blues, poetry, etc. Our souls. Are they being bought?

Our children don't get a chance to hear these art forms because alot of us aren't exposed to them.

Now I'm sure the many poets and writers here at Destee have MUCH to say on this SILENT somewhat genocide that is taking AFRICAN AMERICAN art and spoken poetry.

Where do you go in your town.

Poetry Readings? Spoken word? Loose the sensitivity and SPEAK!

I wish that I could hear this brotha. Rare are the brothas who are brave enuff to speak on the issue of rap music and how much of it is raping the minds of children. The arts are of no interest to the majority of youth...sadly. Only the adults can turn that around, if you can get enuff of them to realize the seriousness of the situation.

Peace and Love Joyce, thanks for joining us. You see that Nexis she's from down your way. Connections, people, connections...

I will do some checking to see if I can find his tour schedule. He also has a CD available. the www.edupoetic. com site is making plans to make it available from that website.

Hey, Thandi

Thanks for the tip. I like the groove here.

The Last Poets put out some timely stuff back in the day. They are the real creators of RAP!

What happened to them?

Peace and Love EZ!

It's nice to see you again. Welcome and I look forward to the spirit you'll bring here. I could use some more conversation. ;)

I haven't had a chance to check out the Last Poets yet. Still. I just recently saw some of Gil Scott's work. Good stuff but you know the man was on some stuff even back then.
