What ....does Marriage means According to the Bible (when are you married?)LibertyLady 11-28-2003, 07:09 PM that was my question........ It's very hurtful to see the divorce rate climbing like it is. I'll be checkin back to see if anyone has anything to offer. Nita Destee 02-11-2004, 02:25 PM Hello Sister LibertyLady ... this is a great question. I think if we remove (from the Bible) from the question, it will generate even more responses. My first thought was of our Ancestors, who used "jumping the broom" as an indication that they were married. This is probably not found in the Bible, but the marriage was just as real. I've heard some say that because they love someone so much, are committed to them, they consider themselves "married," even though they do not have a "marriage license." There are even "common law marriages" that are based simply on the fact that you've lived together as a couple for some amount of time. I think, in polygamous relationships, the "wives" that follow the first wife, may not have any "legal" ground to stand on, but consider themselves just as married as the first wife, since this country does not recognize such unions. I think too, that some men call extra women in their life, "wives," in an attempt to bring honor to what may be extramarital affairs. I wonder, in historic Africa, what constituted "marriage?" I'm sure as large as Africa is, there were many different ways to recognize "marriage," and few if any were based on the Bible. Great Topic Sister! Destee Blackbird 02-11-2004, 03:41 PM Alafia all, Yes, this is an intriguing question. I would like to see the responses. As a young brother, recently married, this topic is of upmost importance to me. I would, however, like to add something to Sista Destee's comments, well one comment in particular. The Goddess Sista Destee wrote: "My first thought was of our Ancestors, who used "jumping the broom" as an indication that they were married. This is probably not found in the Bible, but the marriage was just as real." At my wedding, my wife and I, as traditional-minded Black folk do, "jumped the broom." It was in reverence to my ancestors (my wife is from Ghana) and also spiritual/symbolic. The broom is connected to the orisa Oya. Oya is the orisa of, among other things, sudden change. I think this symbolism of the broom and Oya is what prompted our ancestors to consecrate their weddings with "jumping the broom." The broom, laid on the ground or held suspended in the air, represented the threshold into a new life. A life of change from the old - sudden change, I might add. Oya, being the bearer of sudden change, was invoked to make this change flow as smoothly as possible. Thus, the marriage was witnessed by the orisa and ordained as valid. Blackbird Sun Ship 02-11-2004, 03:51 PM Peace LibertyLady, Again, great question. Marriage in the bible was more traditional, in the sense that the marriage was a bonding of a man and a woman including the uniting of clans, tribes or families. There usually was ritual ceremony and oaths but, depending on the circumstance, it was a verbal based agreement, using cultural norms and beliefs as a guide to meaning. I think it is impossible to use the bible to understand modern day marriage, because marriage is more cultural, than it is religious. Spirituality was usually so imbued intrinsically in everything and was as innate as eating and drinking to most early cultures. I think we uniquely emotionalize and spiritualize marriage much more than the early biblical societies. Marriage use to be a necessary-given; there was no such thing as the swinging single life, as we know it today. Another thing is, almost all of the well-known prophets were polygamist that raises a whole different set of ideas and ethics, which are not always translatable to modern European courtship and matrimony. I think monogamous contractual marriage has nothing to do with the original cultural idea of marriage. In this marital structure, women were originally no more than property (chattel), domestic workers (maids) and heir-bearers (breeders). If you study Greek culture, patriarchal Rome and the origins of European Christendom, you will probably have a better understanding of modern marriage than trying to understand what the bible instructs. Again, regardless of what people say, marriage is more cultural than religious. I believe that the bibel is my guide for knowledge for a good marriage... itsnot a assurance to a good marriage....or for a good marriage...(thats al in destheny ,real love and faith ,its all in god) but i like to know what God means with Marriage...trough his words.... i know some things what they have written means with that but i like to share opinions... In dutch the word marriage translated means ""trouwen"' the word trouw mean "'faithfull"'.... and i mean not to go all in gramar... cause i know its all sumthing thats you have to experiance to.... but i like to know wha it realy means before i step in it.... for example In a lot of seremony,s they ask if they PROMISE......to be faithfull loyal carefull... they make a promise to god...(is that maybe one of the reasons for al the beak ups) while ....the bibel clearly says that that its better to make not a promise... it says "'Let Yes be Yes and No be No"" anyway.... i believe that there are alot of divorces and break ups..... because people Realy dont know what marriage means........ I have my thought and ideas for what it realy means Acording to God ..the bibel (cause the bibel is gods word.....that what i believe ) and i like to share it with you ...... but i like to hear whats youre opinions are... if its cultural or ....or western ...thats welcome to... but i,m looking for answers for that same question that i putted on the top... and guys Sweet ones.... . now some of yall are probebly calling me already Mis Bibel... and think i do everything according what is in there (not ....but i try just to safe myself with that knowledge and that works fine with me..) and that i dont live.... aw man you should see me.. no one would probebly believe that i am a cristian.... for example that i dont read books or am not open to listen to other religions or culture things.. i do ........cause The book of life says ""seak through everything and behold the good"' its just that when i walk away from the path i know ...a lot of times i get confused ... by some world wisdoms...and that i always turn back from were i started from... anyway all respons are welcome... but that was my question... and i know i maybe wont find some of the answer here but... i try..... thanks all .....sweets  by the way how are yalll doing...........(mist ya) i,m doing good .. . god it working in my life..... he is working in our lifes... Love liberty Sun Ship 02-12-2004, 08:10 PM Peace Sister LibertyLady, I have the highest respect for what you say, you believe. And I am not challenging your faith. But if you look at something you alluded to in your post, you will see there is some truth to what I said, about marriage being ruled more by traditional culture than religion. Quote Sister LibertyLady: “for example In a lot of seremony,s they ask if they PROMISE......to be faithfull loyal carefull... they make a promise to god...(is that maybe one of the reasons for al the beak ups) while ....the bibel clearly says that that its better to make not a promise...” unquote If your assertion is correct. It proves that many of these marital vows are based on pre-Christian traditions and cultures. Take any Christian religious culture and exam the history of matrimony in that culture. You will find many pre-Christian or other than biblical practices in the ceremonies and in the philosophical ideas of being a wife or a husband. Quote Sister LibertyLady: “i believe that there are a lot of divorces and break ups.....” unquote Here again, the bible actually speaks more against divorce than almost anything else. Basically, “you can’t get divorced before god” But most Christian religions allow the option of divorce to Christian couples. Then the Old Testament religio-cultural ideas about marriage, are different from the early Christian church ideas. Most of the today's guidelines to marriage were designed by the early church fathers (theologians) based on their cultural interpretation of what the Bible (New Testament) implies about marriage. Otherwise the prophet Paul promotes celibacy. One good example is what I said about polygamy in the Old Testament and its continued practice in Palestine during the time of Christ. Though the bible instructs the polygamist couple and condones polygamy, as a Godly form of marriage. The modern church rejects this form of marriage because of today’s different cultural norms. Matter of fact; let’s look at what I posted in the other thread concerning polygamy: “quotes St. Augustine: “Now indeed in our time and in keeping with Roman custom,”…”It is no longer allowed to take another wife, so as to have more than one wife living.”” This was a biblical interpretation of marriage, enforced by local cultural authority and is now accepted as a “true” biblical teaching (monogamy). Saint Augustine was a church father (a early theologian who constructed the interpretation of canonical scriptural rule). Marriage is a spiritual union, only if spiritual people get married. If you haven’t already, get a Strong’s concordance and find and read all of the verses that deal with marriage and see what kind interpretation you receive. Peace and Love, Sun Ship Revcurley 04-13-2004, 05:00 AM that was my question........ Like anything if you ask a hundred different people this question you will get a hundred different opinions, the Bible is a road map of life with many lessons some of us get it and some of us don't the same can be said about marriage as you no by the divorce rate. So I will give you my opinion of what I believe God's purpose for marriage is, first and formost it is a covenant between a man and a woman the foundation on which God based procreation, marriage also teaches us selflessness humility passion patience honor respect, all the ingrediants of the magic we call LOVE. If you go any where in the world you will find marriage to be the corner stone of any culture because to sustain a civil structure family must be the most important part of it, it also gives us an understanding of the nature of God; If you look at the world today and most of it problems it can be contributed to the break down of the family struture. soblessed 04-14-2004, 12:22 PM libertylady, ijust wanted to say i agree with everything that revcurley said and that it was right on point.i feel too many people take marriage lightly and in fact in is a sacred bond that God has designed for a man and a women.God created Eve for Adam not Eve and 10 different women, lol seriously the bible is, I believe the trus source to having a good and healthy marriage. soblessed 04-14-2004, 12:30 PM libertylady i found some things for you to read first it says that the husband is to be the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church.Ephesians chapter 5 verse 22.it also says for the husband to love the wife the way Christ loved the church.Ephesians chapther 5 verse25.i would recommend that you read ephesians chapther 5 verses 22-31.God never intended divorce to be but it is because the hardness of our hearts .people being unwilling to forgive.Matthew chapter 19 verses3-9.For better or for worse is exactly what it means no matter what Im gonna stay with you .Not until i find something better or someone who looks better.Poeople just give up to quickly.I hope i have been some help. Also read 1st corinthans chapter 7 verse 3 ,4 13 & 14 LibertyLady 02-07-2005, 12:08 PM i know its along time ago.. but thank you all from youre respondings.. i put this back up...here.. to look for new respondings and how people see it.. and some of youre respondings brought me furder.. and were also how i saw it for myself.. Lovelibertylady:heart: Radical Faith 02-08-2005, 03:04 AM According to the The Holy Bible marriage was the result of the separation of the sexes. A truely good is the reflection of the image of God. Man and Woman together compliment eachother forming a whole being or the complete image of God. Man must love Woman just like his own body and vice versa. If man is knowledge then woman is wisdom and what is created between them is understanding. Just like RevCurley said the foundation of civilation marriage. It is the first institution of God. The relationship between Man and Woman is crucial for the survival of a civilation. Peace & Love Radical Faith Auroraflower 05-15-2006, 04:20 PM hi fam  its a while ago......
