To those that expressed an interest in participating in a book chat here at our Forums, thank you. :) Now the next step we need to take is to begin to organize how the group will function.

Everyone is invited to participate in a "Book Chat Formulation" discussion on Thursday, July 31, 2003 at 8pm, ET, in our general Voice Chat Room. At that time we will discuss the following:

How frequently to meet
What day/time to meet
Name for the book chat series
Identify the types of books you will be interested in reading.
(Note: The booklist will be confined to African American authors only.)

Basic ground rules for operation, which will include:

--how voice chat works
--roles of room moderators and chat facilitators
--length of each chat session
--Method for communicating to each other

Those that plan to attend, please let us know by responding to this thread. In preparation for our discussion, you might want to think ahead about who your favorite authors are, what was the title of the last book you read and come to the discussion with a list of, at least, 3 book titles you're interested in but haven't read yet.

Feel free to post any questions you might have about the book chat series in this thread.

i can't seem 2 pull up the voice chat screen 4 some reason. can any1 help?

when i click on 1 of the hyperlinks a blank window opens up, but it just stays blank until finally, it says: cannot find server.

any suggestions?

Ohhhh Doc Parker !!! i'm so sorry you've not been able to get in! can you tell me what browser you are using? it needs Internet Explorer in order to work properly. Tell me too, is AOL your ISP? It too requires a little extra help ... let me know.

thanks 4 ur response. my isp is netzero, broser = internet expolorer. i don't understand what the problem is, but i noticed b4 i cld nvr get n2 chats here. i've tried clicking on the various links on the home page & other pages, but none of them seem to work 4 me.

f u, or any1 else can suggest some alternative ways i might b able 2 access chat, i 'd b grateful.

try going to the start icon and to program then to internet explorer type in www.destee.com/chat and see if this help

Okay Doc Parker ... Doc Destee is here ... hehehe ... :)

Let's see if we can narrow this problem down ... tell me this ...

Step 1. when you click on this link ... www.destee.com/chat ... do you get a page that shows you 2 options, one for video chat and one for voice chat?

Step 2. if you do, you should be able to enter your name in the "voice chat" option ... the one on the right ... and press the ENTER button.

Step 3. if you have been able to get this far, then a black page should load that says ... if this is the first time you've loaded our voice chat you will be prompted to accept a plugin, please click ACCEPT when prompted ... when you see this page and message, after ACCEPTING the plugin, just wait a few seconds and you will be transferred to the chat room lobby ...

Step 4. if all of the above has happened as described, you will now be looking at a screen that has two rooms listed ... OPEN MIC ... and ... CLASSES ... you can click on the text of either of these rooms and you will be transported into that room.

Step 5. if the above works, you will now be sitting in the chat room and can see the names of others present, and can start typing to them ... and can hear them on the mic, or the music, or whatever is happening ...

Okay Doc Parker ... tell me ... how far do you get in the process outlined above? Do you get through Step 1 successfully ... but Step 2 hangs you up ?? ... let me know so we can narrow this down because i want you in voice chat with us !!! :)

destee, big ups 2 u, i got much farther using ur guidelines than eva b4. all of ur steps worked until i got 2 step 4: the choices were general chat or open mic/poetry.

when i clicked open mic/poetry i got a tiny window that said: disconnected from server. i'm taking that 2 mean that the chat was not active at this time (5:32 sun, aug 3), is that a correct interpretation? when i clicked on general chat, nothing happened. still, this is closer than i've been b4 2 actually entering the chat room.

so, 2 answer ur ?, i made it successfully 2 step 4, but was unable 2 proceed beyond that. hey, i'd like 2 join in as well. :thanks:

nawww ... but fa real ... if you got far enough to see the 2 rooms ... GENERAL DISCUSSION and OPEN MIC / POETRY ... the chat has actually loaded and you're in the lobby, just need to open the door and come on in ... by clicking on the text of either of these 2 choices

now ... the fact that you rec'd the "disconnected from server" message ... is an indication that during that precise moment, the server was obviously having trouble

please walk through the process again at your convenience ... i'm almost always in the chat room ... am in here now ... and sitting on pins and needles, watching the door ... to see you make your grand entrance!

let me know if it continues to give you this disconnected message ... it shouldn't ... but with technology, it surely might ... and we'll have to find an answer to it

well, tried again, twice (actually 3 times) 2day w the same results. i get a 2" square box titled: VBscript which says: disconnected from server & has a small 'o k' box 2 click. at that point, i hv no choice but 2 click the 'o k' & thats the end of it.

don't feel bad f u feel like giving up (cause i do too).

still, i appreciate all ur help (really, i do). its no big deal.

i don't hv any problems w posting anything, so i'm gr8ful 4 that.

do u hv yahoo messenger? if u do, or f another moderator does, mayb we cld text or voice chat on it during an attempt to enter the chat, so i can describe exactly what's happening while it's happening, f that's o k. let me know please.

Doc Parker ... i don't use the messenger thingies but am going to write the chat developers about your specific experience. Perhaps they can tell us why it is doing this. I'll post back here after i hear from them. In regard to the 2 issues facing the whole state of alabama ... :lol: ... no, we don't have a special place to post these, but please feel welcome to post them (and anything else you can't find a place for) in the "Open Forum (http://destee.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=83)." :)

SuddenPassion Sister, of course it is not too late to join in! You know better than that. Even if a person wanted to join us during our 12th month, that would be fine. Just purchase the current book we're reading and join in during the chats. That's it Sister. We'll be meeting on 08/14 to discuss the first half of this month's book. See you then !!! Doc Parker ... i hope this isn't too much trouble, but the developers said the following:Could you ask your Member to go to http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp and download and install Microsoft Windows Script 5.6. This should resolve his/her problem.Please give this a try Doc Parker, because i really want you in here with us! :)

clicked on the hyperlink & got the page loaded. 1 problem:

at that site, they have the script dwnloads for windows: 2000; Me; NT4; & 9x; but not 4 windows 98 :( , which is what i have. perhaps they know a site that offers it 4 windows 98?

Hi Doc Parker ... the option that is labeled:

Microsoft Windows Script 5.6 (Windows 9x, Me, NT4)

is the one you want. Often, software for Windows 95 and 98 will be labeled as Windows 9x (representing both 95 and 98 with the "9x").

u were right. silly me. when i opened the page, it said right there n plain view, win 98. where's the smiley w the dunce cap?

anyway, the dwnload only took about 3 minutes, i restarted the computer & tried to enter chat again. no luck! i got the xact same little window that said, dissconnected from server.

mayb this has somethin 2 do w the alignment of the starz

i'm beginning 2 feel i'm putting u 2 a gr8 deal of xtra work.
