View Full Version : Health / Beauty : Black men, can we discuss your prostate?
NNQueen 06-06-2003, 01:08 PM I know this is a sensitive topic. I've heard it can be an "interesting" exam... :bazooka: :jawdrop:
HOWEVER...let's not be babies about this and ignore the importance of having your prostate examined routinely.
Not only is it important to you, it's an issue for the women in your lives as well, particularly if you're sexually active.
Because we love you, please check this out...

Chaka 10-01-2003, 06:12 PM Sister NNQueen. Oh, this should be a good topic. I'm game. I am 58 years old. Whenever I do go to the VA all I ever want is a CBC done. Part of the lab is a PSA which is a way of checking the prostate without invasion. I believe that a diet where we eat a lot of vegetarian animals, is a culprit in lots of health issues. I am basically veggie. If the elephant doesn't need meat I don't. I don't take any meds, I walk just about everywhere I go. No smoking and drinking. I don't let them (VA) do alot of things they would like. I'm gonna let you speak to me on this one. I am very athletic, and my CBCs always come back dead center. I have no health problems, and so I don't do what they say. The VA think I'm a bit touched by not having them probing and writing scripts, just because I'm a certain age. Tell me what you think. Also I have had a life long habit of eating raw garlic, I do take SAM-E.
And prenatal vitamins if I can get them cuz they are the best.
I enter senior olympics. Medicine as it is practiced (?practiced?), I have no need for the knife and drug therapy. It's necessary for those who need it, but I stay away.

See. Not a lot of replies on this thread. That's indicative of how most men feel about looking after they're prostate. I think it's the way it's marketed. You can't market keeping a healthy prostate like you can for a mammogram.
If you told most men that a healthy prostate leads to increased or better sex drive and stamina (which it does) we'll be on top of taking care of it. It's just semantics.
NNQueen 12-21-2003, 01:47 PM HerukhuMaat,
To be frank about it, I don't understand why there hasn't been more discussion on this topic with so much about it in the news these days, including Colin Powell's recent surgery. It wouldn't surprise me if research data indicates that African American males have a higher rate of the disease. I know this is a sensitive subject, but so is breast cancer. It took thousands of women dying of the disease for it to finally receive the recognition and research dollars it deserves for women to stay healthy and alive. Prostate cancer should be no different. If sex is that important to men and staying virile, shouldn't your overall health be just as important?
I hope someone reading takes this very seriously!
Peace and thanks for your input!
SayWord 12-30-2003, 08:13 PM I'm 23...I've never had a prostate exam and I'm not sure if I need to worry about that right now. I'm kind of ignorant to this. I would like to know more. If anyone has any info for me let me know.

hey,
I've been taking care of my prostate for a while now. But at the same time, I've always been really health conscious. A lot of the supplements for sexual enhancement contain ingredients that help your prostate.
The prostate gland is used for the production of seminal fluid, that helps transport sperm in ejaculate. A strong prostate in essence helps somewhat in sexual performance basically. Any supplements or foods strong in zinc and magnesium are usually good for the prostate.
SayWord 12-31-2003, 05:17 PM Alright...thanks for the info. When should I start going for :uhoh: prostate exams?

I don't know what the big deal is among most men sis.....
I've gotten my prostate examined since I was 25 and I don't think it's intrusive or offensive.
I don't even feel funny about it.
((shruggs shoulders))
I know I ain't gay and won't ever find a finger up the anal stimulating...so why should I duck or try to avoid something done only once every 2 or 3 years?
I've heard many theories of why prostate cancer is so common among black men.
I heard that too much sex and ejaculation was one reason it was so common; but on the other end of the spectrum I heard that black men weren't having enough sex for our nature and the fluid was building up and causing cancer.

I think it's a combination of having to deal with more stress (racism, etc.) and not having fair access to healthcare.
More people would go to the doctor if they had the insurance to afford it.
cursed heart 01-14-2006, 12:56 PM I tried to get my ex to have one.
He's 35 yrs old.
He said no way is anyone sticking their hand up my *****!

Well, as a person that hates going to a gynecologist it is a little embarrassing. I can understand someone being apprehensive.
But men have to understand if you don't get it and you are sick you could lose your life or your private parts. It's worth an hour of embarrassment.
