Blue Candy, thanks for posting to this thread because it served to remind me that it was even here. There was a time when a long time passed before anyone responded so I thought no one was interested in my questions.

I've enjoyed reading all of the responses. They definitely reveal the diversity among us which is a beautiful thing. Even though the questions may have appeared to be disjointed or awkward, they were intended to reflect our integrity, compassion, self-image, and sense of responsibility.

Reading the article you linked really surprised me. I thought people were smart enough to know those bleaching creams are damaging to your skin!

Anyway, it's sad to read articles like that. I can't get mad at those women for doing what they did. The bombardment of white media is very big. And their media has it's own image of how women should look like. It's like those advertisments are telling you are ugly and that you should try to look like the models that are thin and have light skin. Rarely do I ever see a full figured black woman advertising. What's even worse is the discrimation amoung black people as well.

The country I was born in, Ethiopia, consider black people who were very dark as inferior. They were given manual work and even a while back were slaves. Just like the white people saw black people inferior, black people who have light skin saw black people who have dark skin inferior. This ignorance must be stopped.

We need to educate our brothers and sisters about what the media is really trying to do. We need to promot pride of our people. To stop the need to look white. And you know what, it's alread starting to happen because of this site and other sites like this. I feel proud to be black when I come here.

You are right, it is a strange phenomenon when some people want to change their physical appearance for reasons due to racism or very low self-esteem--but it happens.

You are also correct about the fact that some Black people practice color discrimination based on the shade of one's skin. That too was/is promulgated by racism as practiced by white Europeans against Black people around the world. It's a mental illness that has a devastating impact among our people but makes tons of money for corporations that cater to this sick way of thinking.

Also true, we need to stop the madness and realize that two wrongs don't make a right, as the saying goes. For Blacks to do to Blacks what most whites have and continue to do is majorly stupid. Trying to act white is not the answer for us and never will be. If nothing else, Orenthal J. Simpson (OJ) taught us that roughly 10 years ago when his ex-wife who was white, was murdered. Black people should not aspire to be like or look like white people. There's no reason for it and just because modern medical technology can change the features of your face, and we can chemicalize, texturize and weave our hair straight, doesn't mean that it makes you one of them....look at Michael Jackson and believe it to be true!

Yes Brother Therious, I agree, the article was disturbing. I always thought that this issue of looks and concept of beauty was an American thing. I had no idea that our sisters in South Africa were subjecting themselves to this false illusion of beauty as some of our American sisters (and brothers) are.

But Brother Therious, I read your responses to the mini-questionnaire and I have to honestly admit that it peaked my curiousity the most. I hope you won't think that I'm being judgmental or anything but I genuinely want to have a better understanding of reasons why you replied as you did to the questions about drugs and cigarettes/alcohol. If I'm being a bit too nosey, just let me know but since you put it out there for public scrutiny, I presumed it was okay to ask for more detail.

One reason I think it's important to ask these questions is so that we don't get caught up into thinking of the world according to our views alone. If the world functioned as we thought it should then there would be no need for these types of discussions because the world would be 'perfect'. But because there's no such thing in existence, I believe it's important to invite people to the discussion table who are slightly different so that we can gain a better understanding of reasons why they do what they do and think the way they think. Only then can we find, not just a good solution, but the best solution to our problems.
