I'm a new jack to this site. I've been looking through some of the posts and I'm wondering how many sistahs here are natural. I've been wearing a teeny weeny afro for a month. I must say I'm loving it. Its funny all the ignorant comments I get but the freedom I feel makes it all worth it. I really wish I'd done it sooner....

How long have you been natural?
How are you currently wearing your hair ?
and any other info you might want to add about your nappy journey.

I think I have been suffering with my hair all my life! My mom stopped doing my hair when I was in 4th grade and I've tried many things (I had a Gerri Curl long after most people had stooped. It kept my hair growing and the flakes away.) Finally I decided that the chemical burns aren't worth the trouble and there is something about loving myself (and my hair) that I wanted to show the world. I’ve been wearing braids and twists for some 6 years now. Sometimes I press it and blow it out but I don’t like the heat damage. My husband got me Copa some 3 years ago and while my hair look the same as before (after about 10 applications) it is softer and easier to work with. After working for a huge corporation for 16 years, I got laid off this past Thursday. I now have the time and freedom to think about what I want to do with my hair. My husband loves the Afro (I think he is have ‘70s flashbacks) He also loves it long so…. I think I’m going to start wearing twists full time and see what it will take to lock it. I really look cute with short hair and it’s easy to manage but I had short hair in high school and was teased a lot. I have a round face and think I look better with hair framing my face. I go to church and everyone seems to have her hair relaxed. What’s a girl to do? Everything seems to be happening at once: turn 40 (last week), lose job (this week). Some moments I feel like taking a straight razor and doing the bald thing. (That’s the nice thing about hair; you can always grow it back) I know that is the panic talking so I won’t do anything permanent for at least 2 months. I might just have it professionally braided so I don’t have to deal with it and it will still look good. I have the time now.

I'm middle-aged and have been wearing my hair natural for 15 years. I used to hot comb my hair for years because that's how I was raised. I had my hair permed once when I let a friend talk me into it and I hated it. But I decided one day to stop straightening my hair altogether and wear it natural and I love it.

I'm not a high maintenance person and never have fussed much with my looks. I'm not "glamorous" by any sense of the word. Ever so often I will either wear my hair short or let it grow longer--depending on my mood. I have to say that the men I've known have always liked my hair longer than short. Do most Black men like "long locks"? But I prefer it cropped.

Any hair maintenance regimen should consider the quality of the water in your area. Hard water can be very damaging to any hair type. My water is relatively soft so I simply wash with a mild shampoo, clear tangles with my fingers or gently with a wide-toothed comb, never brush, allow to air dry, apply a leave-in conditioner for curly hair and apply a non-alcohol, water base gel to control frizzies. I should probably get my ends trimmed more often but I don't. My hair has a natural S-curl texture that relaxes with low humidity and has more bounce and body in high humidity.

That's my "natural" hair story. :)

My journey started about a month ago. I went and researched everything: from locks to afros to it all. I love being Natural. I think it's My road to freedom, and I'm not doing this for show

It's more for me and my Journey to Becoming more Afrocentric.

Love the natural way and live the natural way

My mom is a natural hair advocate. I never had a perm until my sophomore year in college. She kept telling me I didn't need a perm with my hair texture. After college, I let the perm grow out.

If I want a straight texture, I will hot-comb it, but for the most part, I shampoo, condition and wear it in a braid or ponytail.

I'm pretty new to this site and have a transitioning question. I stopped perming my hair in March and have been wearing zillions. What is the best transitioning style or styles? Doing the BIG chop is not an option. Since this is my 2nd time around trying to go natural I need to expand my options or I know I will go back to perming. Also, does anyone know of any natural hair salons in the Detroit area?

PEACE,

i'm new to the site, but i am natural. i've been growing locs for almost 4 yrs now. it is a beautiful experience... getting to know and love the very thing i've run from most my life - my natural hair. there's definitely a difference compared to press & curl and even perms. i'm natural to stay!

I am a natural sister. I chopped it off to about 1/2" all around about three months ago. I did it because I'm in the military and It seemed like the best thing for my hair in the desert, where I am now. I am in love with the freedom that the cut has given me. I am still asked why I cut it all off, but I also get a lot of compliments.

All in all I'm happy to be nappy.

Well my hair is 3/4 natural right now and i am tempted to straighten it but i won't. The reason why i am tempted is because my hair is very very difficult to maintain. I have just taken it out of braids, i will put them back in again in a few weeks, loc extensions and then when i take them out i haven't a clue what i will do with my hair then.

I've been wearing locs for a little over a year now and I love it! I have learned a great deal about myself, my hair and other people along the way.

I completely understand about the ignorant comments---the main one being "why in the world do you want to do that?" Instead of getting frustrated or angry, I try to use the opportunity to educate those who are really interested in the answer to the question.

At any rate, I love my locs and would never go back to perms, weaves and all of the other things I used to do to my hair. There is a freedom---a pure freedom I tell ya!---that comes with natural hair. There's nothing like not having to worry about getting your hair wet, not having to spend hours in the salon, etc.

I don't knock anyone who chooses to wear their hair in an unnatural state because I'm a true believer in to each his/her own but for me, it's LOC FOR LIFE!! :D

I myself just started this summer going natural. It was in twisties, but it was hard to maintain. I wasn't planning on getting dreds or nothing, i just thought it look cute that way. Its actually coily but fine. Besides, when i was using chemicals, it was keeping my hair from growing. Right now, im wearing my hair down curly-like. Keep loving your hair and it will love you! :)

so many threads .. just getting to this one...my hair has been natural for over 30 years...i just finished conditoning it with mayonaise...it works...put it in at about 9 this morning and took it out around l this afternoon. I don't cut my hair anymore (just the ends when i think of it).. I do brush it...when i was young my mother use to brush, brush brush...wash, oil and brush...as i began to work with my hair myself i realized that she was just training the hair...sometimes i wear it slicked back..wash it, oil it, put a stocking cap on it and when you wake up in the morning it holds nice and tight...within that you can style it with parts..or if its long just a roller so that the back curls up..
sometimes you shouldn't do anything to it..go for a day or two if you can without combing or brushing...learn to use your fingers to comb your hair also..it gives you different styles ..wash it and braid it to dry and get other styles..explore standing in the mirror and with combs and pins playing with other styles...if you color it..use the no ammonia no peroxide formulas..it doesn't damage..the only brand name like that is clairol..but their is a japanese brand that is no peroxide and no ammonia..and a couple of natural brand s the same.. I was locked in the early 80's but i found the maintenance of locked hair was lmore time consuming then any other way . (note i went to jamaica and had it pulled apart...i didn't want to cut it all off...but i donot recommend that)
for me..i dont..never did wash my hair alot , i definitely use a conditioner , for awhile i used one that was from australia(i figure in that heat they know about hair) and it worked for awhile...i've shifted again...i leave it inmy hair maximum of 3 minutes , usually 2...but thetexture of my hair is frizzy to tight curl only in the hot humidity. my daughter, has denser and coarser texture will keep in the conditioner for almost 4 or 5 minutes. I use dixie peach hair pomade (for almost 35 years), sometimes dax and alot of times hemp oil...if i can't find those i use baby oil in my hair... if you are new at it...you have to train it...you can determine how you want it to be...but the comb, the brush and the hands will help you do it...
to straighten yoour hair...find some one who knows how to thread...not cornrow ..no extensions..but using heavy sewing thread style it up for you...actually it takes less time then all the other styles and when you take it out the hair is straight..(or much straighter than it originally was) so many things...i can't remember them all...hope this helps and if you think of something more specific you want to know just post it...i will definitely check this sight again...or if i am late...sorry

I started out with a two strand twist(very small). I would untwist them every now and then to get a different style which was a wavy sassy afro. I never combed my hair and now they are locked. When I took the twist apart they were locked and that's the style I wear now and loving it.

Please ladies, no perm. A black woman's hair is so beautiful. I love braids and locs and all that good natural stuff. I always have. I have a hair fetish anyways, so I really make kind of a big deal about a woman's hair. I have a friend who wears her hair natural and she was thinking about perming or cutting it and I almost killed her. Just kidding about the murder part. But keep it natural. They all envy. Much Love ladies.

I have been factually napptural for a few years now and I enjoy the springy, spongy, spritely, capriousness of my hair.

There is no one in the world that has hair as Kink-tified as Black hair. Thus, it amazes me that more Black people don't celebrate the unavoidable yet unique fact that no one has hair quite like ours.

Its excellent to be different.

Lucky, thank you for sharing the link to the natural hair site. I joined. I thoroughly enjoy my natural hair. It is the healthiest its ever been because I don't use harsh chemicals or heat. I'm partial to the 'fro'--I don't loc or braid or twist. I just let it do it's thing--its very much wash and wear kind of hairstyle. I love the way it smells when its clean too. There have been times when I've been close to sisters with extensions and weaves whose hair smelled badly due to sweat, hair product and dirt build up. A very foul odor. I think Black women are beautiful no matter how they wear their hair, but I wish more of us that are in the movie industry and public arena would wear naturals. Could you see Condoleezza Rice or Oprah or Congresswoman Maxine Waters with naturals? What about Beyonce?

Yup,I'm natural and Lovin' every bit of it!!!. I got a perm when I was 11 and kept it in my hair throughout High School. When I turned 20, I was like" that's it, I'm startin' over", and I don't regret it one bit!.So, I cut my hair - which was shoulder length @ the time (but straggely) and wore braids for a couple of months.Natural Hair is beautiful, it's strong, durable and resilent....Yeah, perms in the end, leads to breakage-major breakage...but, if done right, it can be beneficial.Right now, it's past my shoulders, it took me 2 years, and my hair would have been even longer if I didn't mess around with it like I have been doing!. But once you go natural, you'll find that it's that was the best descision that you could have ever made!..Go For it!!!!

I had long hair down to the middle of my back, then my mom permed it..cuz it was soooooooooooo thick. The perm broke it off. Soooo i stopped perming it, even though its very tempting. I havent permed it since march of this year. I cut it short..got this pretty curly pattern goin on..at the nape of my neck.. Im back at the boards. When I had a relaxer in my hair, my scalp and hair was irritated and red. i had a bald spot in the middle of my head, and would itch beyond belief. Eversince ive been natural,my scalp has been healthy, hair grew back in the bald spot..hair is real thick and curly.. Best thing i couldve ever done, and i was so scared to do it. I have'nt permed my hair in about six months now and before that it was a year. I have been wearing it in conrows not sure what I want to try next though. You never know with me, when I feel a change comming its usuallly on.

To answer Barbiedolls question. Some sisters call the extension natural because the hair is not chemically treated. Wigs actually have been around for longer than you think. Even before the so called founding fathers was sporting their decked out wigs, with the sexy kneehighs and beltbuckle shoes. LOL I think I read somewhere, that in Ancient Africa, some of the queens were wigs and extensions too.

I'll research that to be sure though.

I'm glad yall are going natural, it's much prettier. Not that it really matters, but I HATE permed hair. It smells funny, yall refuse to go out in the rain or humidity, I dislike the smell of the products that you put on it, it doesn't feel good, and it takes forever for yall to fix it up. And it's always breaking off and coming out in the sink and the shower and on the pillows and in MY hairbrush (which you know you don't need to be using anyway, but now that you got your hair all up in it, you might as well just take it). Ok, that's my rant for the evening.

i have been natural for 1 1/2 years and have been locked for 1 year this month. I am truly happy to be nappy and when i look back on my permed days i can't believe i used to sit in the beauty salon for about 5 hours every 2 weeks wasting my time. i do not miss it at all and that perm smells so bad.

Hi everybody :x:

I straightened my hear at the age of 13 or 14. I liked it then, because it was something different and because it bounced back. But soon I choose for thick braids, cause my hair started looking dull.
At the age of 16, I choose to wear my hair natural (no extensions, no straightning. no nothing..the experimenting was over!!).
I can remember I braided my natural hair and everybody liked it...me the most ofcourse!!

But I couldn't keep it up. I put extensions(braids) in my hair once more time at the age of 17 and I straightened it for the last time at the age of 19 ( don't ask me why...I regretted it as soon as I did it).

I have not put any extensions or straigtening creme in my hair since the age of 19.

But the experimenting wasn't over. :drums:
I have had a short fro, big fro, 'red spicy' fro, black fro, brown fro, black twists, red spicy twists. I used to twist my hair, take them out and leave my hair like that. Or braid (thick braids) it at night when it was longer, take the braids out and just leave it like that. There was a period I thought about taking dread locks, but then I won't be able to comb my hair nomore.
And I LOVE to comb my hair and play with it!

Now I have short twists, cause that is easy to maintain. Because of all the experimenting it may seem that I'm a high maintenance person when it comes to hairstyles....I'm not!!

I encouraged (not pressuring) my sister and a friend of mine to wear their hair natural :yesno:
and now it's difficult for them to straighten it again. (hahahah my plan worked...for them.. ).
So I try to encourage some of my friends and family to give natural hair "a try"!

Ok this was the history of my hair until today!!

Hi.......
I decided to cut off my "straigtened" hair 18 mths ago!! Now I have fantastic dredz!! WOW I feel free!!
I agree Nobody NEEDS a perm of any kind. Yes it does allow some ease of styling etc. But what message are we continually sending to the others around us. Once again something about us is perceived as NOT GOOD Enough?

Im a 17 year old female and have been doing the natural thing for about 2 years. I now have locks in my hair and they are about shoulder length.

Everyone ask me when I am gonna cut them off, like thats the only option I have. For me my locks are apart of me, and everytime they grow I grow with them, so their here fa eva.
