Poll: which do you prefer, message boards or chat room?

Although I have just started posting on the boards, I have visited the threads for a while now. As a guest I noticed a trend, while some of the posters here (kemetstry, uptowne, destee) also frequent the chat room. The majority seem to only post on the boards. So.....I'd like to know which do you prefer (chat rooms or message boards) and why?

PAN in a word they are PUNKS!
They can't think and chew gum at the same time! Mental Midgets when you have to give an immediate response to someone’s banter that’s too much of a challenge! But there is a compromise we could also have a LIVE STREAMING MEASSAGE BOARD where people who don’t have time to hang in a chat room could comment on all topics at their leisure.
PAN you know me man; I love to stir the pot! I am the King of CONTRIVERSEY and I love the title. I hope I provoked some of these Posters into Chatting! I do like both though!

POSTING stirs my mind when I see a good topic. I want to express my unbridled feelings on the subject and spur others to challenge what I have said (I LOVE A GOOD DEBATE) but even more I like to think that I have swayed others to my way of thinking, most times in chat we just glance over a topic

However CHATTING gives the immediate response that the boards don’t and you don’t have to sit and wonder if someone will pick up on your topic that you hold dear. I mean if it’s dumb you’re told it’s dumb and if its twisted you are told its twisted it not left up on the boards to be ridiculed for the rest of your life. I love the way we bounce from subject to subject and how we share our personal experiences and make friends and have that concern for one another the boards are just so impersonal (but as I have said in a post “THE CHATROOM” that this chat room is like no other

Anyway PAN welcome to the BOARDS! There are quite a few people up in this place that need a good TONGUE WHIPPIN! And you are just the man

OH YEAH DES DID YA HEAR THE STREAMING REQUEST!!!!!!

Uptowne, my man........how are you doing?

I would think that the destee chat crew would be more afraid to come on the boards than vice versa. For the most part the topics on the message boards are more thought out (in terms of social relevance and importance) than the majority of topics on the chat. It is also easier to be exposed as a "mental midget" on the boards because you have more time to look up the facts (history, news, etc). Therefore giving misinformation on the chat could be because you didn't have time to reference information, but doing the same on the boards is probably because of laziness or ignorance.

Anyway keep working on these people to come in the chat room man. Particularly at night because I have insomnia, and I need something to do at 3:00 in the morning...........lol!

I enjoy both forms of communication but if I had to rank order them I'd have to say chat first and message boards second. I never visited the boards until recently when the chatroom was in transition from the old to the new. I enjoy it and have become a "fan" of several of the people that post here. They have great minds and what appears to be strong character. The boards allow you to think more on the topic and about what you want to say, which is especially good when the debate gets a bit heated.

I do like the spontaneous feedback found in chatrooms best although the depth of conversation is somewhat limited because of the "chatter" and high speed at which the communication can flow. But we've had some great discussions there as well. I have found that chat allows you to build friendships easier than message boards. I've met some phenomenal people at Destee's Place. There's a group of "regulars" who have invested a lot of time over the years, with Destee's help, to build the room into a "family" atmosphere and we welcome newcomers. Hope to see you all there real soon! :)

I have to ditto what Queen said. However, the reason I am not in the chat rooms is every time I go to the chat room , noone is there. What time should I come. I have clients all day so my visits are inconsistent but If I know a specific time to show up I will certainly make an effort to get there.

Dre', right now I'm only able to participate during the days...afternoons mostly. At the present time everyone gathers in the voice chat room. However, that is expected to change when the number of participants and regular visitors grow larger. I hope to see you there! :)

Heeeeyyyyyyyy Panny,

Y'all (Panny, Uppie, Monster, and Keme) know my first love is the Chat-Room but I can't access it so I hang around the forums just to stay close to my people.

Scorp...we can't wait. The day you enter the chatroom, we're gonna blow the mic up in voice chat cause we'll be shouting so loud. *lol* You won't believe this but Holly Wood was actually DJ'ing today and we had to snatch the dadgone mic away from him so that someone could read their poetry! *lol* He was playing Brian McKnight's new cd and laughing at him cause he was whining worse than Keith Sweat since his wife left him. They were callin' him Cryin' McKnight. *lol* Anyway, hurry up and figure something out. We miss you!!! :)

I can't get in there at all...each time I try, both my home pc and work pc get stuck with the "voice" download. Is there a chatroom that is not voice activated?

So I just stick to the message boards.

Sister CarrieMonet ... let's try to get you in Sister, 'cause you'll love it!

First, you have to be using a Windows Operating System and Microsoft Explorer for your browser.

Are you using AOL as your ISP? If so, follow these four steps prior to trying to enter voice chat.

USING AOL? - DO THESE 4 THINGS FIRST

A. Login to AOL
B. Minimize AOL Window
C. Launch Explorer Outside of AOL by clicking on the icon in their task bar or going to START >> PROGRAMS >> INTERNET EXPLORER.
D. Enter www.destee.com/chat using that newly launched browser window.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ENTERING VOICE CHAT

1. go to www.destee.com/chat
this is the main chat login page

2. enter your name and click on ENTER
if you are a Premium Member, you can click on MEMBERS LOGIN and a screen will appear, asking for your username / password. Type the username / password that was issued to you (this is separate from your forum username / password). If you've not been issued one yet, PM me (http://destee.com/forums/private.php?do=newpm&u=1) with what you'd like your password to be and i'll set it up for you right away. Prior to getting it, you can simply type your name and click on ENTER, as every Member does.

3. then click on Start Voice Chat
this button will appear after you do the above

4. Click Yes / OK to accept the plugin
a black page should appear, with text on it telling you about the plugin you must accept for the chat to load properly. Once the prompt comes for the plugin, click yes to accept it, it is safe. It may take a moment for the prompt to appear and another few moments for it to download.

5. You will be presented with a page that shows our 2 rooms
OPEN MIC - we play music in this room, read poetry, discuss, sing, whatever we want.
CLASSES - we hold classes in the CLASSES voice chat room.

6. Click on the room of your choice and come on in!

Sister CarrieMonet, are you saying that you get stuck on step 4 above? It just sits there? If that's not it, let me know at exactly what point you get stuck, and we'll try to help you get past it.

Looking forward to you joining us in voice chat Sister!

I personally prefer message boards. I am not one to jump into conversations in the real world and am equally slow to jump into a real time thing on the internet. I tried it once here and once on another site but it wasnt my thing so I stick to posting messages.

Thank you for the directions. The problem is not my operating system..it's the plug-in program.

I got into chat one day for a brief moment while here at work. Obviously my company caught that and blocked the download from happening again in the future. It would have been different if your program was one that only downloads once...but it does it each time I try to go back.

So...I can't get in from work.

As for my home pc...it has been having issues. Although my pc is just one year old, and is running windows XP...it has become disabled and that is probably why it won't work there. But ironically, my home pc was getting hung up in the same spot...right on the countdown for the plug-in.

Sister CarrieMonet ... the plugin only downloads once, and sits in your cache / cookies directory. Once you try to enter chat, it checks to see if it's there, and if not you are prompted to download the file. If it is there, then you aren't required to download it again. Even with this being the case, employers are becoming more and more vigilant in restricting these type of activities during work hours, so they've probably done something to get around this (wouldn't be too difficult to do).

I'm sorry to hear that your pc at home is disabled. Once you get it back up and running you shouldn't have any problem entering the chat. While it is a little different than some chats, it's not a steep climb to get in. We don't have a "text only" chat solution available, but our voice chat does provide text chat within it. This allows those who don't have speakers or a microphone, to still take part, as they can type in text and read the text of others in the room. There is something for everyone in there, so i hope you are able to join us soon!

MrBlak ... i think you're writing our voice chat off too quickly! We are nothing like other chat rooms ... just like our forums are not like any others! Very caring, respectful, mature and conscious group of individuals! The kind of folk you want to hang out with. But i do understand and recognize, that there are some folk who simply prefer discussion forums, and some that prefer chat. We've had chat in this community since 1999 ... one of our dearest and most darling Members, Sister Remby, has been here from the very beginning, everyone loves her, but she spends most all of her time in voice chat ... she hardly ever posts to the forum! So i feel you Brother, but would love for you to check out voice chat one more again!

If anyone has any questions, i'm right here, as usual.

Wow....I forgot about this thread! Ironically after being a chat junkie for my 1st 4 years on the net (and encouraging others to come into chat when I started this thread), I now prefer the boards myself.

hmmm, I'm lost then. I've been into chat once. Met Monetary in there...and someone who does not post on the boards. If I'm not mistaken, MBA helped me get in that day. But the very next day when I tried to get in, it got stuck trying to load the voice plugin...maybe not a download, but stuck on the countdown.

At any rate, I just wanted to meet everyone. Hopefully one day I will. The PC Doctor is coming by tomorrow so maybe by next week I can talk to y'all.

Thanks again Destee for all your help.

Okay Sister CarrieMonet ... after the pc doctor leaves, let's try it again. You were certainly in there if you saw Monetary and MzBlk has been great in helping many get in, so i'm sure she is probably the one that helped you too! We want you to meet everyone and everyone to meet you ... in the more up close and personal way that voice chat allows ... so i'm looking forward to the opportunity.

Much Love and Peace.

I chat and post all day long. IM, email, and if I can ever afford one of those video phones..... I know, I know. Hey, I was born near the beginning of the computer age. I LIVE for this techno-stuff. When I can figure it out. :)

I prefer posting. Sometimes I don't feel like chatting, sometimes I prefer to just post and read others' posts. There are also times when I feel like listening to music, watching tv, and/or talking with my kids while on the boards.
